How Long Will it Take?
The length of time required to complete theCommercial Helicopter Pilot Additional Rating Course depends on your availability, motivation to learn and flight proficiency. It usually takes about twelve weeks to complete the course if a reasonably full schedule is maintained.
What Will I Have to Do?
Complete ground school or a home study course for the Robinson R22.
Log sufficient flight training.
Pass an FAA oral and flight test.
What are the Medical Requirements?
If the candidate holds at least a current third class medical certificate, a new medical certificate is not required before taking the practical test. However, a second class medical certificate is required if the candidate wishes to exercise the privileges of a Commercial Helicopter Pilot after passing the practical test.
What are the FAA’s Flight Training Requirements?
- 150 hours minimum flight time as a pilot, that includes, at least:
100 hours in a powered aircraft, of which, 50 must be in a helicopter
100 hours as Pilot-in-command flight time, which includes, at least:
- - 35 hours in helicopters and
- - 10 hours cross-country flight in helicopters
- - 5 hours of instrument training in aircraft
- - 4 hours cross-country (2 hours day / 2 hours night)
- - 10 hours solo flight time, which includes, at least:
- - 5 hours in night/VFR conditions, including 75NM cross country
- - 3 hours in preparation for the flight test
