What is the Purpose of the R-44 Transition Course?

This course will satisfy the SFAR 73 (Special Federal Aviation Regulation No. 73) training requirements for the Robinson R-44 helicopter and provide the necessary endorsements to act as Pilot in Command (PIC) of an R-44.

How Long Will it Take?

The length of time required to complete the R-44 transition course depends largely on your availability. It can take as little as 1 week to complete if a full schedule is maintained.

Why 10 hours of Dual Instruction?

Per SFAR 73 to 14 CFR Part 61, a pilot may not act as Pilot in Command of a Robinson R-44 unless that person has received 10 hours of dual flight instruction in a Robinson helicopter and an endorsement from an authorized instructor. SFAR 73 also requires an annual flight review for pilots with less than 200 hours in helicopters, 50 of which must be in the R-44. However, a pilot may credit up to 25 hours of time in the R22 toward that 50 hour requirement. To satisfy the SFAR 73 requirements for flight reviews, please see our Flight Review Course.
